Which area does this house open?
The 10th house is read through public action, vocation, responsibility, reputation and visible contribution. These need not all occur in paid employment. MC and the 10th house are related concepts but not the same cusp in every house system. A placement does not determine one career, status or level of success.
House system and the actual cusp
House 10 belongs to the angular group. This is different from a sign's cardinal, fixed or mutable modality. Placidus and Porphyry use the main angles; Whole Sign uses complete signs and Equal houses uses 30° intervals from the ascendant. Changing systems may change a body's house number but leaves its longitude unchanged. Start this guide from the house number actually calculated in the chart table.
How to add planets and the ruler
A body placed here brings its own theme into this area of life; the house is not itself a zodiac sign. You can also identify the ruler of the sign at the cusp and examine that body's sign, house and aspects. State whether traditional or modern rulership is being used. An empty house does not remove its topics from life. Many charts have houses without planets, and the rest of the chart remains available to read.
A hypothetical placement example
A hypothetical Sun in the 10th house invites questions about owning a contribution; Mercury in the 10th about information and communication in the work. In Whole Sign or Equal houses, MC can fall in another house and its degree is read separately. Forcing the MC marker onto the 10th-house line would distort the calculated information.
Consider the opposite house
The opposite 4th house is the private foundation. Considering visible work alongside a private space of security can reveal the cost of an achievement. How others see your work and how the work feels to you are different information.
Experience and the limits of a reading
Define your contribution in one sentence instead of naming a job title. Record the difference between visible and less visible work. Does your measure of success account for actual capacity and the rest of life?
