Which area does this house open?
The 1st house is the chart's starting area oriented towards the person: approaching the world, initial contact, relationship to the body and presenting oneself. The ascendant is its central reference. Rather than treating it as a fixed description of appearance or the whole character, examine how you enter a setting and make your needs visible.
House system and the actual cusp
House 1 belongs to the angular group. This is different from a sign's cardinal, fixed or mutable modality. Placidus and Porphyry use the main angles; Whole Sign uses complete signs and Equal houses uses 30° intervals from the ascendant. Changing systems may change a body's house number but leaves its longitude unchanged. Start this guide from the house number actually calculated in the chart table.
How to add planets and the ruler
A body placed here brings its own theme into this area of life; the house is not itself a zodiac sign. You can also identify the ruler of the sign at the cusp and examine that body's sign, house and aspects. State whether traditional or modern rulership is being used. An empty house does not remove its topics from life. Many charts have houses without planets, and the rest of the chart remains available to read.
A hypothetical placement example
A hypothetical Mercury in the 1st house invites questions about first contact through inquiry or speech; Saturn in the 1st about roles and boundaries. This does not mean one person is more intelligent or the other less happy. Sign and aspects change the questions raised by each body, and one house number cannot describe the whole person.
Consider the opposite house
The opposite 7th house concerns the other person and reciprocal agreements. Writing your needs and the other person's needs in separate columns turns this axis into a practical relationship question. Giving one side visibility does not require the other to disappear.
Experience and the limits of a reading
Record the first three things you do in a new setting: observe, speak, take a task or wait. Which follows a need and which a habit? Include an example where your approach changed with the setting.
When birth time is approximate, read placements close to cusps with care. This page does not calculate a life outcome or replace listening to actual experience and gathering information about it. Do not mistake the example for your own chart data. Clearly recording a reading that does not fit is more informative than forcing it to agree.
